Medicaid and publicly funded substance use treatment are often coordinated through regional behavioral health systems. The required pathway may depend on the individual’s county of residence, Medicaid plan, eligibility, requested service, and current funding rules.

Some individuals may need to complete screening or authorization through a local access center, prepaid inpatient health plan, community mental health organization, or Medicaid health plan before services can be approved.
